Andrii Petrovych MARCHENKO

Andrii Petrovich Marchenko was born in 1951. In 1974 he graduated from the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI) and was qualified by mechanical engineer in the specialty "Internal Combustion Engines". He began his work as a master of the Kharkiv Tractor Plant. He studied in postgraduate school (1980-1983) and in doctoral (1989-1992). He defended his PhD (1984) and doctoral (1994) theses. He has the scientific title of Associate Professor since 1993, Professor since 1998. At KhPI, he went from a Senior Engineer to a Leading Researcher and from an Assistant to a Professor.  From 2000 to the present, he has been working as the Vice-Rector for Science and Research at KhPI National Technical University, and from 2001 to 2016, he also worked as the head of the Department of Internal Combustion.
During his term of office as Vice-Rector for scientific work, the level of scientific and technical cooperation of the university with domestic enterprises, organizations, scientific organizations of NASU, and universities of near and far foreign countries has significantly increased. Ensures the planning and organization of scientific research work at the university, coordinates the research of the university's scientific schools on solving current problems of science and technology and increasing the country's defense capability, the work of specialized councils for the defense of theses, scientific research of students, graduate students, doctoral students, conducts other organizational and scientific work. The results of the university's scientific activity are a significant factor in the fact that the university has a leading position in various ratings among domestic technical universities, and according to the international rating QS World University Ranking for the past 5 years, it has taken 2-4 places in the overall rating of domestic universities.
Professor Andrii Marchenko is a known scientist for mechanics in the field of “Internal Combustion Engines” (ICE), who enriched science in the theory and practice of creating and modernizing ICE various functional goals, he is the leader of the Ukrainian Scientific School of Internal Combustion Engines. Studies, including when performing international grants, allow university’s researchers to obtain generalizations and offer rational decisions on significant theoretical and practical results regarding forced engines of internal combustion of earthly vehicles, a new type of ICE – ceramic or adiabatic, relative to which a modern current layout was created and studied such types of ICE.
The scientific research carried out over the entire time made it possible to propose new scientific concepts, methods, and generalizations. Among them, the main ones are the methodology of analysis and synthesis of the internal combustion engine working process using the exergetic method of research, new methods of research into the process of combustion of alternative fuel in an internal combustion engine cylinder, new mechanisms for the formation of nitrogen oxides NOx in diesel cylinders, which became a new solution to the theory of nitrogen oxide formation by Academician Zeldovich Ya. B., the concept of partial dynamic thermal insulation of the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, which ensures an increase in the resource of the cylinder-piston group of an internal combustion engine by 3-4 times, and together with the technology of discrete strengthening, etc. to increase the level of specific load at non-stationary thermo-mechanical loading of internal combustion engine parts by 1.5 times, the concept of structural and technological design of cast internal combustion engine parts, etc.
Professor Andrii MARCHENKO pays considerable attention to the training of scientific personnel, for more than 20 years he heads the specialized council for the defense of candidate and doctoral theses in the specialty 05.05.03 - engines and power plants, and since 2001 he has been the chairman of the All-Ukrainian competition of scientific works in the same specialty. Under his supervision, 5 doctoral theses and 14 candidate theses were defended.
He has creative ties with the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, domestic and foreign universities, has repeatedly given lectures and at scientific conferences in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, South Korea, China, Turkey. He was a member of the editorial board of the scientific publication of the Warsaw Polytechnic "Proceedings of the Institute of Vehicles". He participated in the implementation and was the head of international grants. He has more than 300 scientific publications, including a 6-volume textbook, 2 study guides, 6 monographs, including 2 monographs in English and 1 in Polish published abroad (co-authored).
He performs extensive scientific and organizational work: editor of the All-Ukrainian scientific and technical magazine "Internal Combustion Engines", Deputy Editor-in-Chief of "Bulletin of NTU "KhPI", from 2005 to 2021 - Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Council of Vice-Chancellors for scientific work of domestic universities and directors of scientific institutions Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, as well as the Chairman of the Council of Vice-Rectors for scientific work of universities of the Kharkiv region.
Professor Andrii MARCHENKO has national and international awards and distinctions: the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 5th degree (Decree of the President of Ukraine № 588/2020 dated 28.12. 2020), Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology (Decree of the President of Ukraine № 1121 /2008 dated December 1, 2008), Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (Decree of the President of Ukraine № 830 dated May 21, 2005), Certificate of Honor of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (№ 862 dated October 11, 2010), award of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine "For the Preparation of Scientific Change" (Decree of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine dated May 16, 2018), Diplomas of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
International honors: the Thomas Jefferson Medal "Light and Liberty", from the Organizing Committee of the International Historical and Cultural Project, 2019 and the Certificate of Gratitude in 2017 from the university scientific, educational and research network USERN.
Honorary citizen of the village of Staromlynivka, Velikonovoseliv District, Donetsk region, where he studied at school (in 2012, when he received the status of an Honorary citizen, before the reforms, such a district still existed).
