Features of the teacher’s professional activity are considered in the training manual. The authors analyzed the understanding phenomenon from the philosophical, psychological and pedagogical points of view. The concept of pedagogy of understanding as a perspective direction in the development of higher education is considered. Particular emphasis is given to the ensuring students' understanding of learning material and understanding of the student’s peculiarities by a teacher as a basis for implementing a person-centered approach. The problem of teaching students the ability to understand another person is also considered.
