Klepikov Volodymyr Borysovych is a famous scientist, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, President of the Ukrainian Association of Electrical Engineers, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine.
Born on July 29, 1939 in Kharkiv.
V. Klepikov’s father was a well-known school physics teacher in Kharkiv, and his mother was a Kharkivenergo employee.
After graduating from the Electrical Engineering Faculty of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute in 1961, he was remained to work in the mechanical rectifier research laboratory. He took part in the development, manufactured and setting of automatic high-speed direct current regulators of direct action at the Dneprovsky Magnesium Plant.
V. B. Klepikov went the way of scientific growth from a post-graduate student up to Doctor of Technical Sciences, and academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1976 he was elected Head of the Department of Electric Drive. For at least 40 years V. B. Klepikov has headed the Department of Automated Electromechanics Systems. For those years teaching facilities of the department were repaired, computing and microprocessor centers equipped with modern equipment were created, a new specialization «Control Systems of Robotic Systems» and a new specialty «Household Electrical Appliances» appeared.
Employees and post-graduate students of the department defended 4 doctoral and 41 candidate theses, 35 new laboratory stands were modernized and created, more than 2500 electrical engineers were trained. The active support and assistance given to the department by many leading enterprises and organizations of Ukraine, where its alumni work is caused by the significant authority of the department and its head, the high quality of training of specialists in electric drives
B. Klepikov has made a significant personal contribution to the development of the theory of electromechanical systems. He is the author of a new emerging scientific field. By a decision of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute Council, his doctoral thesis «Dinamika elektromehanicheskih sistem s otritsatelnyim vyazkim treniem» [Dynamics of Electromechanical Systems with Negative Viscous Friction] defended in 1989 was certified as a new section of electric drive theory.
He has developed foundations of the theory of advanced electromechanical systems which are of great practical importance for creating electric drives with non-linear frictional loads. V. B. Klepikov is the initiator of scientific studies on the use of neural networks and genetic algorithms for electromechanical systems control, the author of the first academic papers in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the head of the first scientific topics according to the plans of the State Committee for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education of Ukraine in this direction.
V. B. Klepikov has been the head of a number of research activities under the decrees of the Government, the State Committee for Science and Technology, branch ministries and enterprises. By means of which the following projects have been developed and implemented: a system for eliminating slipping of rolls of rolling mills («Zaporizhstal» plant); vibration suppression device in heavy roll-grinding machines (the Kharkiv Machine-Tool Building Plant named after Kosior); highly stable aircraft power source (the Kharkiv Aviation Plant); a system for preventing slipping of the wheels of mine electric locomotives (the Kharkiv plant «Elektromashina»); an electric drive of a scanning device with a friction electromagnetic clutch (the Kharkiv Institute of Radio Astronomy of the National Academy of Sciences) and others.
Volodymyr Borysovych gained special respect of the scientific community of electrical engineers due to initiating and organizing the annual International Scientific and Technical Conference «Problems of the Automated Electric Drive. Theory and Practice» (1993) at difficult times of economic and creative decline.
The conference united scientists, industry experts, and specialists of design organizations in Ukraine and encouraged them to make new scientific achievements.
V. B. Klepikov has organized the search of the Electrotechnical School’s historical roots, and has made a lot so that the merits of prof. P. P. Kopniaiev, as its founder, have been recognized, and has initiated the installation of P. P. Kopniaiev’s bust.
Klepikov’s election as the President of Electrical Engineers Association of Ukraine has taken place due to his authority as an honored worker of science and technology. He is a full member of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine, Editor-in-Chief of the journal «Electroinform», Chairman of the scientific and methodological subcommittee of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in the field of «Electromechanics», and a member of several expert commissions of higher state institutions.
V. B. Klepikov has considerable international authority. Fluent in 4 languages. He has repeatedly made scientific reports in Russia, Germany, Italy, Hungary, India, Syria and other countries. Full member of the international IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) association. For his scientific achievements, he has been awarded the Signum Aurum Universitatis Medal by the University of Mishkol. Pedagogical activity dominates in V. B. Klepikov’s life. Over the years, he has prepared lecture courses on «Powerful and impulse devices», «Fundamentals of scientific research», «Industrial electronics», «Introduction to the specialty».
In recent years, V. B. Klepikov has paid great attention to issues of theory and practice of energy and resource saving in Ukraine by means of electric drives, has shown that electric drive is a solution for saving energy efficiency in electrical systems. Being a device that helps to automate and to optimize technological processes, the electric drive by means of reducing waste production, loss of consumables materials, improving the quality, reliability and durability of machines and mechanisms can provide an additional energy-saving effect, which is more the fivefold economical than primary savings of energy.
V. B. Klepikov’s scientific, pedagogical and social activities have been marked by government awards: the Order «Friendship of Peoples», the Medal «For the Development of Virgin Lands», and the Kazakhstan Medal «On the 50th Anniversary of Virgin Lands». In 2002, he was recognized as the winner of the regional competition «Higher School of Kharkiv Region — Best Names» in the nomination «Scientist», and in 2005 in the nomination «Head of Department», the finalist of the All-Ukrainian contest «Leader of the Fuel and Energy Complex-2002» in the nomination «Scientist».
In 2005 V. B. Klepikov was granted the title «Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine». At the Department of Automated Electromechanics Systems Volodymyr Borysovych has succeeded in creating a united professional and successful team.
He treats the staff of the department with respect and kindness, has a great and undisputed authority among them and enjoys their love.
