Dabagyan Areg Vagharshakovich: On the Occasion of the 140th Anniversary of NTU "KhPI"

The book exhibition "Areg Vagharshakovich Dabagyan. An Outstanding Scientist and Educator", dedicated to the 105th anniversary of his birthday and for the occasion of the 140th Anniversary of NTU "KhPI", is presented in May 2025 at the Scientific and Technical Library (library, subscription room No. 1, room 45).
Areg Vagharshakovich Dabagyan (28.05.1920–26.09.2005) was a scientist in the field of cybernetics, mechanics, dynamics of machines, applied vibration theory and control systems. He was a member of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) from the USSR, a full member of the Academy of Technical Cybernetics, Honored Worker of Public Education of Ukraine, Honorary Doctor of NTU "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute", professor (1963), Doctor of Technical Sciences (1962).
He was born on May 28, 1920, in Tiflis. He graduated from secondary school with a gold medal. In 1936, he was admitted to the Moscow Aviation Institute without entrance exams. At the same time, he attended lectures at the Medical Institute and mathematics lectures at Moscow University.
After his father’s arrest in 1938, as the son of a "public enemy", he was expelled from the university and the Komsomol, surviving on casual earnings. Due to nervous shocks and harsh living conditions, he developed pulmonary tuberculosis and spent several months in hospital. Dabagyan was offered to choose from several universities outside the capital, and he decided to study at the Kharkiv Mechanical Engineering Institute. Since September 1939, A. V. Dabagyan was a student of the Auto-Tractor Faculty majoring in "Dynamics and Strength of Machines".
After the start of World War II, he was sent to study at the Academy of Armored and Mechanized Forces. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Kyiv Tank Technical School, which was located in the city of Kungur in the Urals at the time. In February 1944, he was appointed a lecturer at the Department of Tanks at the Academy of Armored and Mechanized Forces.
In 1947, he defended his candidate dissertation at KhMMI and was invited to the Department of Theoretical Mechanics of the institute.
In 1964, a new specialty "Flight Dynamics and Control of Rockets and Spacecraft" and the department "Automatic Motion Control" were established at the Engineering-Physics Faculty of KPI to train specialists in this area. The department was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor A. V. Dabagyan.
In 1972, a new specialty — Automated Production Control Systems (APCS) — was opened at the AMC department. In 1977, this specialty was separated into an independent department, also headed by Professor Dabagyan. Unique curricula and program packages were developed for all specializations. Dabagyan taught the courses "Theory of Vibrations", "Control Theory", "Experimental Research Methods", as well as original courses such as "Designing Technical and Economic Systems of Countries" and "Human Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence". Professor Dabagyan was a member of the editorial board and editorial council of the international journal "Engineering & Automation".
A. V. Dabagyan headed the department until 1990 and continued lecturing until 1998. In 1998, due to a severe illness, he lost a leg, but continued scientific work until the end of his life. Even in a wheelchair, he developed a new theory of wave processes in politico-economic systems.
He made a significant contribution to the study of dynamic processes in turbine generator rotors. Studying the dynamic processes occurring in the rotor, the turbine blade apparatus, and its control system, he brought a new perspective to the problems of dynamics and strength of turbomachinery. Since 1951, the scientist conducted research in the field of electromechanical vibrations of rotors in hydro- and turbo-generating units.
He was the author of 12 monographs, 117 solo-authored articles, and held 10 inventor’s certificates. Among his students are 51 Candidates of Sciences and 10 Doctors of Sciences. Twenty-four of his students became lecturers at KPI, and five became department heads.

We invite everyone to get acquainted with the works of Areg Vagharshakovich Dabagyan at the Scientific and Technical Library (library, subscription room No. 1, room 45).
