Samorodov Vadym Borysovych is Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine.
In 1975 after graduating from the Engineering and Physics Faculty of the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute (now — the National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute»), during 1975–2001 he worked at the Department of Wheel and Tracked Vehicles as Junior and Senior Researcher, Assistant, and Senior Lecturer.
In 1982, after defending his candidate's thesis, Samorodov V. B. became Associate Professor of this department, from 1983 to 1990 — Deputy Dean, and from 1990 to 1995 — Dean for work with foreign students of NTU «KhPI». After defending his doctoral thesis in 2001, Samorodov V. B. took a position of Head of the Car and Tractor Industry Department, since 2003 — Professor, and since 2007 — Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine.
Professor V. B. Samorodov is one of the founders and a leading scientist in the field of the theory of structural and parametric synthesis of stepless hydraulic volume mechanical transmissions (HVMT) of cars and tractors.
Authored of 347 scientific works published in Ukraine and abroad (among them 11 textbooks and 3 monographs, 296 scientific articles, 5 author's certificates, 32 patents of Ukraine).
Since 2013, the h–index (Hirsch index) of scientific publications citations of Professor Samorodov V. B has been maintained at the level of 13. Under his leadership, 10 candidate's and 1 doctoral theses were defended. For many years, he has been a member of Specialized Scientific Councils, a member of the editorial boards of a number of specialized scientific and technical journals, including foreign ones. For 16 years he has been Editor-in-Chief of the thematic Bulletin of NTU «KhPI», Series: Automobile and Tractor Construction.
Apart from working at the department, during 2005–2006 Samorodov V. B. held the position of Deputy General Director of JSC «KhTP» for perspective development and modernization of tractors and held the position of Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council of JSC «KhTP». Under his leadership, KhTP-17221, KhTP-17021, KhTP-16331 and KhTP-3110 tractors were modernized at JSC «KhTP».
In 2005 Samorodov V. B. developed an experimental methodology and under his leadership PJSC «KhTP» and NTU «KhPI», for the first time in Ukraine, conducted large-scale comparative tractors field tests of leading tractor manufacturers. New criteria for the efficiency of machine-tractor units were scientifically and practically substantiated.
In 2007, on the basis of these tests, Professor Samorodov V. B. founded the methodology of spatial and topological analysis of the relationship of technical and economic indicators in order to improve and predict them — a new scientific direction in the car and tractor industry.
From 2010 to 2013 Professor Samorodov V. B. headed the department of hybrid and stepless transmissions of the Industrial Group «Ukrainian Industrial Energy Company» (UIEC), where under his leadership, the first stepless hydraulic-mechanical transmission for classic wheeled tractors with a capacity of 350–400 hp was developed in Ukraine.
From March 1, 2013 Samorodov V. B held the position of Chief Consultant of the General Director of JSC «KhTP» on advanced development and modernization of wheeled tractors within the framework of the agreement on strategic cooperation with NTU «KhPI». From August 1, 2013 to March 1, 2016 was Deputy Director of Technical JSC «KhTP» and Project Manager for the development, manufacture and testing of the first in Ukraine stepless hydraulic volume mechanical transmission (HVMT -1C) for wheeled tractors with a capacity of 220–240 hp produced by JSC «KhTP».
Such a stepless transmission (HVMT -1C) was developed at the Department of «Car and Tractor Industry» of NTU «KhPI» for the first time in the post-Soviet space, manufactured by specialists-professionals at JSC «KhTP» in close cooperation with NTU «KhPI» scientists and it allowed tractors manufactured by JSC «KhTP» to be competitive on the world market. KhTP-21021 and KhTP-242K tractors, equipped with the latest transmission, successfully passed factory and field tests. JSC «KhTP» has been preparing for serial production of new tractors with such stepless transmissions.
In 2016 Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine, Professor Samorodov V. B proposed a new class of transmissions — hybrid stepless transmissions with beneficial use of circulation capacities.
He is in charge of responsible scientific and applied work on the theoretical substantiation, development and manufacture, testing and introduction into production of a hybrid stepless transmission for tractors with a capacity of 240 hp. for transport technologies on railways and for use on agricultural tractors.
Such a hybrid stepless transmission was developed and patented at the NTU «KhPI» Department of «Car and Tractor Industry» for the first time in the world and since 2016 and has been manufactured at the Kharkiv «Spetskran» plant.
Significant specific results of the scientific activity of Professor Samorodov V. B. are the scientific substantiation and participation in the development and testing of original stepless transmissions for samples of armored vehicles produced by JSC «KhTP», the Malyshev Factory, a car lifting unit based on a KRAZ (Kremenchuk Automobile Plant) vehicle for the Kharkiv Transport Equipment Plant, calculation and theoretical substantiation of the hydro-volume turning mechanism of the «KhTP»-200 tractor and the results of field tests of the «KhTP»-200, forecasting the optimal technical and operational parameters of promising domestic tractors, the development of the first in Ukraine and in the post-Soviet space of stepless hydro-volume mechanical transmissions for classic wheeled tractors with a capacity of 350–400 hp (UIEC) and for tractors with a broken frame with a capacity of 220–240 hp (JSC «KhTP»), work on the creation of the first hybrid stepless transmission for agricultural tractors and motor-tractors for railways («Spetskran»).
Professor Samorodov V. B. successfully combines scientific, organizational, and pedagogical activities. For more than 35 years, he has been teaching courses of lectures on the theory of optimization and mathematical modeling of car and tractor systems, and has made significant achievements in the organization of the educational process in higher education.
He is one of the developers of higher education standards for the bachelor's degree in the directions 133.01 — Cars and tractors and 274 —Automobile transport and he is the author of educational and methodical publications on master's training. For many years, he fruitfully worked as a member of the Methodical Council of NTU «KhPI».
Since 2003 he has been closely working with Kharkiv's leading motor vehicle enterprises «Kharkiv-AUTO», «Frunze-AUTO», «Autotrading-Kharkiv», ATP-16361. Under his leadership, a methodology of increasing the profit of ATP-16361 was developed and implemented due to the optimization of routes and the special logistical use of this company's vehicles on each route.
Currently, he is Head of the Industrial Expert Council for the «Transport» direction of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance.
Every year, under Samorodov V. B.’s supervision, students of the «Car and Tractor Industry» department receive the highest awards in diploma theses competitions of NTU «KhPI» and at All-Ukrainian student Olympiads and contests of student scientific works. The number of such awards over the past 6 years is 45.
Professor Samorodov V. B. was awarded with the Certificate of Merit of the Executive Committee of the Kharkiv City Council for his conscientious and fruitful work, high level of professional skill, significant contribution to the development of education and science, and active public activity in 2010 and 2015; in 2012 and 2015 — the Certificates of Merit of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration for significant personal contribution to the development of education and science in the Kharkiv region.
