Leonid Volodymyrovych's career biography began at Novokramatorsk Machine-Building Plant (Kramatorsk, Donetsk Region) at the department of Chief Designer of mining equipment, where he held the following positions:
1962–1964 — design engineer;
1964–1966 — design engineer of the III category;
1966–1968 — design engineer of the II category;
1968–1971 — design engineer of the I category.
His further career has been connected with Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. At first he worked at the Department of Machine Components (later – the Department of Machine Components and Applied Mechanics):
1971–1974 — graduate student;
1974 –1980 — Assistant Lecture;
1980 –1983 — Senior Lecturer;
1983 –2011 — Associate Professor;
2011 — Professor.
In 1979 L. V. Kurmaz defended Ph.D. thesis «Sintez harakteristik uprugih muft mehanicheskih peredach po maksimalnyim velichinam uprugih momentov v perehodnyih rezhimah rabotyi» [Synthesis of the characteristics of elastic couplings of mechanical transmissions by the maximum values of elastic moments in transient modes of operation]. Later he received the title of Associate Professor (1984), and in 2013 — Professor of Politechnika Świętokrzyska w Kielcach (Poland).
L. V. Kurmaz’s scientific potential totals 114 scientific (86) and scientific- methodological publications (28), including 19 textbooks and manuals; 7 copyright certificates; 15 research projects, including 7— in Ukraine, 8 — in Poland.
Among the undoubted merits of L. V. Kurmaz is the establishment of a design school in the discipline «Machine Components» in Poland. In 2000 he received an individual award from the Minister of Education of Poland for the textbook «Detali mashyn — proektuvannia» [Machinery Details – Design], published in Warsaw in 1999 by PWN (Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe).
Leonid Vladimirovich is Academician of the International Academy of Technical Education (2004).
The main directions of Kurmaz's scientific research concern issues of parametric designing; design in the T-FLEX program.
