Ved Marina Vitaliivna. On the occasion of her 65th birthday.

Ved Marina Vitaliivna (09 May 1961 – 08 February 2021) was an outstanding scientist, a specialist in chemical technologies and modern materials science, a highly qualified educator, Doctor of Technical Sciences (2009), Professor (2009), and a representative of a renowned dynasty of chemists.
M. V. Ved was awarded gold medals at the International Competition of Inventions and Innovations “New Time” (2007, 2010), a Finalist Diploma at the International Investment Projects Competition “Kharkiv Initiatives” (2012), and winner diplomas at scientific development contests of the All-Army Competition of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (2013, 2016, 2017). She also became the winner of the regional competition “Higher School of Kharkiv Region – Best Names” in the nomination “Lecturer of Fundamental Disciplines” (2014). She was awarded the Certificate of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, an Honorary Certificate of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, and commemorative badges (2014, 2018). Marina Vitaliivna was the first female scientist to become a laureate of the National Prize of Ukraine named after Borys Paton (2021, posthumously).
For her significant contribution to the restoration of Kharkiv Polytechnic, her dedication and loyalty to the university, and her long-standing support and friendship, a star in the constellation “Organic, Inorganic, Chemical Engineering” of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute alumni was named after Marina Vitaliivna Ved within the “KhPI Starry Sky” project of the NGO “Association of NTU “KhPI” Alumni”; she also received a certificate (2025).
Marina Ved’s entire life was connected with the Polytechnic Institute. Throughout her professional career, she worked as an engineer, researcher, senior researcher at the Department of Technical Electrochemistry, associate professor, and professor at the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry, where she taught chemical engineering disciplines. She served as a reviewer for the well-known journals Corrosion Science and Surface and Coating Technology. She was a member of the Scientific Council of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the problem “Electrochemistry.” For many years, she worked as a delegate from Ukraine in the Working Party on Electrochemical Engineering within the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. Her life credo was: “Docendo discimus” (“Teaching, I learn”).
Professor M. V. Ved devoted her scientific work to chemical technologies and modern materials science. She obtained important scientific results in the field of technologies for forming conversion and composite coatings to strengthen surfaces of products operating under harsh conditions and highly corrosive environments. Together with Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher School of Ukraine M. D. Sakhnenko, Marina Ved founded a new scientific school at NTU “KhPI” titled “Electrochemical Design of Functional Materials.” The outstanding research results of this school in electrochemical materials science gained international recognition and contributed to strengthening the high reputation of national science worldwide. Among the achievements of the scientific school are: design of functional coatings and systems using modern information technology-based calculations; electrochemical monitoring of the protective properties of polymer and paint coatings to predict their service life under operating conditions; gradual abandonment of monometallic and mono-oxide galvanic coatings in favor of composites with metallic and/or oxide matrices; and involvement in solving problems of the defense sector of Ukraine.
Professor Ved is the author of 1,000 scientific and educational works, including 18 monographs (5 in English), 16 textbooks and teaching manuals (4 in English), 113 inventor’s certificates and patents (including 6 international), and more than 20 chapters in collective monographs. As a scientific supervisor, she trained 5 Candidates of Sciences and 2 Doctors of Sciences.
In May 2025, the Scientific and Technical Library of NTU “KhPI” hosted a book exhibition titled “Scientist, Lecturer, Inventor… a Charming Woman” dedicated to the memory of Marina Vitaliivna Ved. The library is preparing for publication a bibliographic index of M. V. Ved’s scientific works and materials about her life and scientific-pedagogical activity.
Additional information about Marina Vitaliivna is available on the website of the Scientific and Technical Library of NTU “KhPI”.
Teachers, students, and all interested persons are invited to visit the book exhibition dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the birth of Marina Vitaliivna Ved (Scientific and Technical Library of NTU “KhPI”, Subscription Department No. 1, Room 45).
