Who has not lived amidst the storm knows not the value of strength…

I stood and listened to the spring.
Spring told me many things,
Sang a ringing, loud song,
Then again whispered secretly and quietly.
Lesya Ukrainka

As part of career guidance work, on February 20, 2026, for the International Mother Language Day and the 155th anniversary of Lesya Ukrainka’s birth, a literary evening “Who has not lived amidst the storm knows not the value of strength…” took place. Students and teachers of Pokotylivka Lyceum No. 2 participated in the event.

Language is the instrument that unites people into a single whole. It is a great treasure that must be respected, preserved, and wisely enriched.
Speaking today about the native Ukrainian language, one cannot help but recall the passionate sons and daughters of the Ukrainian people who preserved it and brought it to us. Among these people are Hryhorii Skovoroda, Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko, Leonid Hlibov, Ivan Franko…
The golden treasury of the native language was enriched by masters of artistic words, among whom is the great Ukrainian poetess Lesya Ukrainka.
On the land of Polissia, on a snowy February morning, a little girl was born who would later call herself Ukrainka and cross the life boundary where immortality begins.

Lesya Ukrainka (Larysa Petrivna Kosach) was born on February 25, 1871, in Novohrad-Volynskyi.
Lesya Ukrainka is not just a writer — she is an entire era in Ukrainian culture.
Today, the works of the outstanding Ukrainian writer are an integral part of Ukrainian literature. Her works are translated into many languages of the world and enjoy great popularity.
Lesya Ukrainka is a symbol of the indomitability of the Ukrainian spirit; her creativity inspires new generations of artists and readers. She entered national and world literature and clothed herself in immortality: “I have lived a beautiful and difficult life. Fate granted me the happiness of leaving my gaze upon the land where I was born and which I glorified. They call me: the Possessed One, the Singer of Dawn Lights, the Daughter of Prometheus! And I am a star — I flared up and faded…”
