Berezhnoi Anatolii Semenovych: On the 140th Anniversary of NTU "KhPI"

The book exhibition "Anatolii Semenovych Berezhnoi. An Outstanding Scientist and Educator. On the 125th Anniversary of His Birth", dedicated to the 125th anniversary of his birth and the 140th anniversary of NTU "KhPI", is presented in September 2025 at the Scientific and Technical Library (Library, Lending Department No. 1, Room 45).
Anatolii Semenovych Berezhnoi (19.09.1910–15.12.1996) was a Ukrainian chemist, a specialist in the field of physical chemistry of silicates and refractory materials and technologies, and a talented educator. Doctor of Technical Sciences (1947), Professor, Academician (1979, Corresponding Member since 1948) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honorary Member of the Ukrainian Mineralogical Society (5th Congress, 1991).
He was born on September 19, 1910, in the village of Ostapie, Khorol County, Poltava region (now Ostapie, Velykobahachanskyi district, Poltava oblast, Ukraine), into the family of Semen Ivanovych Berezhnoi, a distinguished physician of the Ukrainian SSR. He completed secondary school in Poltava.
In 1928, he entered the Faculty of Chemistry at the Kharkiv Technological Institute. In 1932, he graduated from the Kharkiv Chemical-Technological Institute. During his studies there, Berezhnoi met and befriended the already renowned scientist Professor Petro Petrovych Budnikov, who specialized in refractories. This encounter defined Berezhnoi’s lifelong scientific interest.
It is worth noting that in 1929, future academician Ivan Vasylovych Obreimov moved to Kharkiv and organized the Faculty of Physical Mechanics at the Kharkiv Mechanical Engineering Institute. He noticed Anatolii Berezhnoi and offered him a path in physics. However, after careful consideration, Berezhnoi chose the "silicate" path.
His son, Yurii Anatoliiovych, became a well-known physicist, a specialist in atomic nucleus theory, a professor at Kharkiv University, and a laureate of several prestigious physics awards.
After graduating, except for the years of evacuation, Berezhnoi lived and worked in Kharkiv.
From 1932 to 1941 and from 1944 to 1966, he worked as an assistant, researcher, head of laboratory, deputy director, and director (1955–1966) at the Ukrainian Institute of Refractories (Kharkiv), which has borne his name since 1998.
In 1966, Anatolii Semenovych Berezhnoi left administrative positions and focused on scientific work. His creative life was devoted to developing theoretical foundations for new heat-resistant materials and producing specialized refractories.
From 1966 to 1970 — Head of the Department of Experimental Mineralogy, which he founded, at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
From 1970 to 1975 — Head of the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry at the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
From 1975 until the end of his life, he worked at the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. From 1975 to 1984 — Head of the Department of Ceramics, Refractories, Glass, and Enamels; from 1984 to 1996 — Professor of the Department.
He lectured on physical chemistry of silicates, refractory technology, and the fundamental principles of new ceramic and refractory materials.
Anatolii Semenovych was a kind and erudite person, an excellent pianist. He was passionate about geology, astronomy, and the history of religion. He generously shared his vast knowledge with his students.
1993 — Elected Honorary Doctor of Kharkiv State Pedagogical University for his contributions to higher education.
1994 — Awarded the title of "Soros Professor".
December 15, 1996 — Passed away in Kharkiv.
He authored more than 200 scientific papers, several fundamental monographs, and educational-methodical manuals for students. His main works concern physico-chemical studies of silicates and high-temperature oxides, and the study of solid-phase reactions in refractory materials.
He was included in the book "5000 Outstanding Personalities of the World", published in the USA in 1990.
Anatolii Semenovych was awarded five orders and numerous medals.

We invite everyone interested to explore the works of Anatolii Semenovych Berezhnoi at the Scientific and Technical Library (Library, Lending Department No. 1, Room 45).
