Women in Science

The book exhibition “Women — the Pride of NTU ‘KhPI’”, dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, is presented in February 2026 at the Scientific and Technical Library of NTU “KhPI” (STL NTU “KhPI”, Student Circulation Department, room 66).

February 11 marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (International Day of Women and Girls in Science).

On December 20, 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution “Science, Technology and Innovation for Development.” It proclaimed equal access for women and girls of all ages to the achievements and development of science, technology, and innovation as a guarantee of gender equality and the expansion of their rights and opportunities. Resolution of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly of December 22, 2015 established the annual celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11.

According to UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 30 percent of scientists worldwide are women, and in Ukraine — 46 percent. Ukraine ranks 12th in the number of women scientists among 41 countries. Women researchers of the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” hold a worthy place in science.

Photographs of 130 outstanding women scientists of NTU “KhPI” and 34 leading higher education institutions, academic and branch research organizations of the Kharkiv region were presented at the unique photo exhibition “Lady Science”, organized by KhPI in 2021 for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event was supported by the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Unit.Kharkiv Innovation Park, SPIE, the Gender Culture Center, and the EU project “The Gender Culture Center as a Platform for Empowering Women and Youth.”

Since 2018, Ukraine has held the L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” competition. The aim of the competition is to recognize outstanding women researchers who make significant contributions to scientific development in Ukraine. The L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” Award is an international program that supports women in STEM by honoring scientific achievements and providing monetary awards and scholarships to researchers working in Ukraine who have Scopus/WoS publications, as well as encouraging young people to pursue scientific professions. As part of the 5th season of the L’Oréal-UNESCO Award, NTU “KhPI” researcher Kseniia Minakova entered the TOP-10 of Ukraine’s most outstanding women scientists in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). She became a finalist of the L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science”—2023 Award.

In March 2025, Kyiv hosted the national conference “Women in STEM: From Dream to Action.” The forum was organized by the “Center for Corporate Social Responsibility Development” within the “Girls in STEM” initiative with the support of the general partner — SAP (System Analysis and Program Development). The conference featured a presentation by STEM education popularizer in Ukraine, Professor of the Department of Micro- and Nanoelectronics of NTU “KhPI” Kseniia Minakova. The Girls in STEM initiative (“Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics”) was founded by the Center for Corporate Social Responsibility Development in 2016. The project unites girls and women from all over Ukraine who are passionate about STEM and aims to overcome gender stereotypes in career choices and to strengthen confidence in building STEM careers in Ukraine.

Kseniia Minakova is an active volunteer of the IEEE Ukraine Section and a member of CRSP. She received the IEEE Region 8 Clementina Saduwa Award 2025. She also became an official corresponding member of the IEEE Region 8 Young Professionals Committee for 2026 — recognition at the level of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences of NTU “KhPI” Tetiana Shmatko has been elected a member of the National Committee of Ukraine on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. The General Assembly of the Committee took place on November 11, 2025 at the S. P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. New members were elected from seven research institutes and ten higher education institutions. The event brought together leading scholars from academic institutes, universities, and research and production organizations. As part of NTU “KhPI”’s delegation, Tetiana Shmatko has repeatedly participated in prestigious international conferences: the 16th International Conference on Vibration Problems (ICOVP-2025) and the 11th International Conference on Wave Mechanics and Vibrations (WMVC-2025) in Portugal, as well as the Fourth International Conference on Nonlinear Dynamics (2025, USA), where she was the only representative from Ukraine.

University researchers make a significant contribution to the development of science and education in Ukraine, actively promoting innovations in various fields. NTU “KhPI” ranked among the top 3 in the main selection of fundamental and applied research among the works of young scientists, as well as in the program for higher education institutions near the front line, conducted by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in 2025. According to the 2025 state certification by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Kharkiv Polytechnic received the highest category “A,” ranking first in Ukraine in engineering and technology. NTU “KhPI” became the Grand Prix winner “Leader of Higher Education in Ukraine” at the 16th International Exhibition “Modern Educational Institutions–2025.” A scientific project by KhPI researchers, “Development of an information-analytical system for preserving and processing documents of ancient archives,” won a gold medal in the nomination “Artificial Intelligence in Education: Innovative Opportunities and Challenges for Educators and Learners.” Among the authors is Professor Tetiana Aleksandrova, Doctor of Technical Sciences, researcher at the Department of System Analysis and Information-Analytical Technologies of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies of NTU “KhPI.”

The British agency Times Higher Education (THE) published the results of the THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026, evaluating universities across 11 fields and 148 disciplines. NTU “KhPI” appears in this prestigious world ranking for the fourth consecutive year, represented in four key areas: computer science, business and economics, physical sciences, and engineering.

For the third year in a row, NTU “KhPI” confirms its stable position in the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2026. The Scientific and Technical Library of NTU “KhPI” is implementing the biobibliographic project “Women — the Pride of NTU ‘KhPI’” (https://library.kpi.kharkov.ua/uk/womenhpi_vid). The project includes women Doctors of Science and Professors whose work contributes to the development of science and strengthens the reputation of one of Ukraine’s leading universities. The project contains lists of scientific works, data on scientific and teaching activities, biographical references, and photographs.

The book exhibition “Women — the Pride of NTU ‘KhPI’”—a display of women scientists’ research from the library collections—was organized by the staff of the Information and Bibliographic Department. The exhibition showcases publications by only part of the women scientists featured in the project, including: Prof. Tetiana Aleksandrova, Prof. Halyna Bezprozvannykh, Prof. Olena Blyzniuk, Prof. Nataliia Hodz, Prof. Liudmyla Hren, Prof. Olena Sira, Prof. Olha Fedorenko, and others. The scientific contributions of women researchers can also be viewed on the official website of the Scientific and Technical Library on the project pages or in the NTU “KhPI” Electronic Repository.
